  • Price range: RM8 - RM30

  • Ambiance: Cafe
  • Style of cooking: Western/Fusion/Local
  • Address: Lot 21 & 23, Ixora Condominium, Jalan Bukit Beruang,
  • Business hour: Daily 8:30AM - 11:30PM

This cafe has the most confusing name. On the signboard it says Coffeeology, but on its logo and Facebook page, it is Cofeology. Hence the title of our post and the sticky photo aren't consistent. We make no attempt to ask about the name, and so be it - whether it is Coffeeology or Cofeology, it sound the same.

In Bukit Beruang, there is a handful of cool and hip cafes popping up in recent years due to the young and vibrant community here (thanks to MMU students). Coffeeology is one of the famous cafe to check out. The cafe takes up two lots which give a spacious dining area. The extensive menu covers full meal as well with options of local dish, Western and fusion cooking. We can see why MMU students love to sit in this cafe to do their school revision. It's spacious and it has lots of food and infinite coffee.

We didn't sample any of the hot food, but we do manage to grab a beautiful plate of berry waffle served with cream. The combination of blue berry, strawberry, maple syrup and fluffy cream sends you right to heaven. However, the texture of the waffle can be improved. A little crunchier it can be will definitely make it the best waffle in town.

The drinks were a little bit disappointing. We ordered chai latte. However, it wasn't "chai" enough. It tasted very bland and the portion of the milk is too overpowering the coffee.

For something different, we opt for citrus coffee. It sounded refreshing and energizing, but the result was far off than that. It came in a pretty presentation of funnel glass, soaked in a bucket of ice. After awhile, a layer of clumped grease was formed on top of the coffee. We believe the grease is from the margarine or butter from the roasting of the coffee. Underneath the coffee there is also a layer of undiluted sugar. Who in the right mind would add sugar into a glass of cold water? Sugar should be added when the coffee is still hot. Otherwise, they could have substitute the sugar with syrup. The coffee has a bitter taste (from the coffee), sour taste (from the lemon) and extremely sweet taste (from the undiluted sugar), but all of the tastes don't blend together. The floating clump of grease made it so disgusting to drink so we left it as it is. Comment has been made to the waiter. I hope they will improve.

Although the experience was put off by the citrus coffee, the waffle was good and the environment of the cafe is cozy as well. It is one of those Instagramable cafe for those of you looking for good place to photograph.

[Melaka] Paddles & Beans Cafe

  • Rating: 3.5 out of 5
  • Price range: RM8 - RM30
  • Pork-free
  • Ambiance: Cafe
  • Style of cooking: Western/Fusion/Local
  • Recommended order: Sugee cake, Flat White Coffee
  • Address: No. 2, Jalan KSB 1, Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka
  • Business hour: Daily 12PM-12AM

Paddles & Beans Cafe is one of the longest standing cafe in town (considering so many cafes barely last a year, this is a big deal). The location is situated at Taman Kota Syahbandar (opposite Old Town Grand), makes it really convenient to get to. There are sufficient carpark outside the cafe. So, if you don't want to go through the epic weekend jam in town, this cafe is a great option.

The cafe has an extensive menu, ranging from Western food such as pasta, local food such as nasi goreng and some fusion like Siracha Burger (chicken) and salted egg fish burger. We tried both the fusion burger. However, it wasn't satisfying. The siracha burger patty was too hard on the crust. It is also pretty hard to eat since the patty is huge. It is almost 15cm tall. The Salted Egg Fish Burger is a better choice compared to the siracha burger. However, the taste was too bland. If the fish patty is fried with spiced batter, it would be awesome. To pair with the burger, we ordered the Truffle Oil Fries on the side. The fries could be better if air-fried. We find the fries were soaked in oil and disappointingly, it didn't taste of truffle at all.

Despite some of the discouraging food, we still go back for the good coffee and cakes. We would like to stress that the coffee is really good.

The things that could be improved are the hot food quality. Also, the menu is quite confusing. We had to flip it a few times to be sure because there isn't any specific arrangement or organization for the menu. Otherwise, this place is a good hangout cafe with friends. Its operation hour ends at 12AM, which is a good option for those of you who hangs out late with friends.
